The Saharawi
Algeria
Over 165,000 Saharawi live in refugee camps in the Sahara desert in Algeria. Until 1975 the Saharawi lived in their own country, The Western Sahara. In 1975 the neighboring countries of Morocco and Mauritania invaded The Western Sahara, claiming it as their own. The Saharawi fled on foot across the Sahara desert in fear for their lives. The United Nations set up refugee camps in Algeria. Today the Saharawi still live in these camps, in one of the world's harshest environments, still awaiting the return of their homeland.
The Saharawi are dearly loved by God, and He has an incredible purpose for them. We seek to demonstrate God's love for the Saharawi people by serving them in practical ways and helping them through their time of crisis.
